Astrology is more then just your sun sign.
August 25th, 2008 | 1,485 wordcountI’m sure when you’re asked “what’s your sign” you go by the month you’re born in. December 22nd to January 20th would be Capricorn, January 21st to February 19th would be Aquarius, February 20th to March 20th would be Pisces and so on and so forth.
We call these signs “sun signs” (originally called the “star sign”) because that’s where the sun was positioned in the time of our birth. That is what we go by when we look up our horoscope in local news papers and magazines, or when we try to find out what the stars say about our personality traits in general.
But did you know that you’re so much more then just your sun sign? Many people actually don’t know this, and this is why when they look up traits about themselves according to their sign they’ll sometimes be left saying half the time “that isn’t me” or “that’s just general, it could fit anyone if you force it”. That’s because there are missing pieces of the puzzle. The sun is the brightest thing in the sky, but there are other planets and factors that effect you just as much, sometimes even more.
An Astrology chart is comprised up of many things. The three most important signs, so I’ve heard, are your sun sign, your moon sign and your ascendant sign also known as your rising sign.
Sun sign - They say this is your base personality, and, among many other things, it has to do with your integrity and honesty. Sometimes it has to do with your responses and reactions to things, and how you deal with people and the things around you.
However a weak sun sign with stronger signs in other areas can override ALL of this. If it didn’t, then we’d just be dividing up the worlds population into twelve different neatly stacked categories (there are twelve zodiac signs). How boring, and how untrue!
This explains why people can have vast differences but have the same astrology sign.
Next up would be your Moon sign - This is a very important sign in your chart. I actually think it’s the most important sign you have. It’s the inner you. It’s your emotions and how you deal with them. If you are even CAPABLE of mastering your emotions or not. This is how you deal with those close to you, and relationships. What you need in life and what you don’t want. What you are content with in life and emotions and what you’re not. What happens regardless of what you’re content with. The presence and force you have with people who know you, as well as your strength, how you see things, and just how far that inner vision of people and the world goes.
Then theres your rising or ascendant sign - How you are seen by the world at large, how your friends and acquaintances see you, and how you are effected by the world and culture around you. What you like in your home, even in certain terms of a relationship and of life in general, and the face you show to the world. It is the costume and mask we wear, as well as what we support in terms of humanity and life, and how we deal with other people on a daily basis.
The other signs can be equally as important. Here are some small descriptions of what these signs may mean for you in your chart.
Before I talk about them, please note: You will never have the whole puzzle put together unless you get a personalized astrology report by a professional that can tell you how these signs **effect one another** in your chart and how that **may** effect your personality as a whole.** ALSO, more importantly, please be aware that these are SMALL descriptions and DO NOT touch upon **everything** that each sign may or may not effect or rule over in your chart.
And now for the other astronomical signs:
There is your Mercury sign, which controls, among other things, your communication, and the types of conversations you like and enjoy. Also effects how you word and say things. Also how you express yourself. Are you vague, or direct and blunt? Do you use metaphors? How do you think? In symbolism? Are you witty or not?
Your Venus sign, which is not only how you are in love and relationships and who you can be attracted to, but how popular you can be with the opposite (or same) sex. How shallow and vain you can sometimes be with yourself too — either in public or in private, with your own thoughts.
Your Mars sign - this isn’t just for war, but also for passion. Are you passionate in what you believe in? How are you in debates? Are you calm, cool and collective, or can you get emotional — either yelling or get hurt feelings? How do you feel if someone doesn’t agree with you? And how are you in sex? What do you like? Are you playful or serious or a little of both?
It’s a common belief that who you are in sex is who you might also be in life. Mars is a very important sign.
There’s your Jupiter sign, which tells how lucky you are (in terms of karma — if you believe in that) and areas that you enjoy.
Your Saturn sign, which are areas that are a challenge for you, or are difficult — whether in life or in a relationships or in general. Also how disciplined you are, if at all. How disciplined you expect others to be sometimes, if it at all.
Then there’s your Pluto sign, which goes by 12 year age groups. This means that once Pluto goes into a sign, it remains there for twelve years and everyone born within that twelve year period has that same sign, and that effects that specific 12 year generation as a whole.
It effects what our fascinations are, and what we will explore as a race. The advances we will make, and our pitfalls. It effects us personally and it effects us on a wide scale. Even those not born within that twelve year time period are effected by what those born into it will do when they are the ones in power and control. Will those born into those specific twelve year time periods rip down the curtain to show the main behind it or will they play it up with power trips? Or will they just be oblivious to it all? Yielding to others? How do they view death, the underworld, the dark side of life? Or do they shun it? And are afraid of it? Or do they not see it at all?
And the same goes for our Neptune sign and Uranus sign. Only the Neptune sign is a fourteen year group. That controls how traditional we are or aren’t. Also, in general, is this fourteen year group dreamers, or realists? Etc. Again, it can also effect you personally as WELL as wholly with the rest of the world or those born into that fourteen year period.
And your Uranus sign is a seven year group. Are we, in this seven year group, or even personally, stable or unstable? Unique or compulsive? Do you have a touch of restlessness about you? How do others see your views on the world or life? Do you often change them? Or do you have a grounding personality? What is your career likely to be? Or will you change careers as often as you change underwear? What would you LIKE your career to be? Do you challenge the every day norm, or do you go with the flow? Are you idealistic or not?
And as a seven year group, how do they handle the world? Politics? What are generally the careers of these people? Do we challenge what came before us or do we settle into it and not want to change anything?
You get the idea.
I hope this article was helpful in learning about Astrology! And as I’ve mentioned before, these are just pieces of the puzzle. In order for them to be put together and make sense fully, you’ll need to get a personalized Astrology report! They’re actually really cheap at astrology.com. You CAN find out some of this information for free, but in order to learn how each sign effects each other and balances each other out in your own personal chart, it just makes sense to get your own full chart. It strings everything together. As said in comments, your Mercury sign, regardless of what it is, can effect your Venus sign. And that goes for your whole entire chart. Everything effects everything else.
As mentioned above, Astrology is LOT deeper then just your sun sign.
I may make this into a series and talk about Astrology in increments, as there is a lot to take in. History, symbolism, and many other things. Fascinating stuff.

I’ve never personally heard of these planet signs you’re going on about, but it’s an interesting fact I’ll have to look into. There are also sites around the net that have very good readings, astrological forecasts, etc, which are free. I had one site in particular I was fond of with incredibly accurate tarot card readings, but sadly, since I reformatted my computer, I’ve had no luck finding it.
In regards to how sun signs have been known to be off, look up your cusp. Often times, when you are born close to another sign, you take the traits of two signs. For example, I myself am a Virgo with a Leo cusp, but I tend to have for more Leo traits as opposed to Virgo. So say you were born on February 18th. You would be an Aquarius, but there’s a good chance you would also have a strong streak of Pisces. Cusps are usually only prevalent within the first 5 days of the end or start of astrological signs, I find. So beyond that, it’s usually ineffective.
There’s many more ways of telling what you are. There’s the Chinese Zodiac and the elements. for example, I am a metal horse. Good with money, but stubborn as a mule. Things like that. The more you learn about this stuff, the easier it is to figure out what’s what. How things pertain to you, etc. To be sure, things can come across as terribly vague, but there’s always the signs and forecasts out there that are spooky dead on. Aside from wasting a few minutes of your day to look this stuff up, what’s there to lose?
I’ve been to some of the free ones, and they’re not bad at all, but a personalized chart is well worth it in my opinion. It strings everything together and let’s you know how, say, your Uranus sign can effect your Venus sign and it’s not one dimensional, if that makes sense.
There’s actually a lot of controversies with cusps. You can’t have two sun signs, which is what most people believe a cusp is. You can only have one. So I’m honestly not sure how a cusp works anymore. Maybe it’s just the suns transition between signs that makes a cusp. Who knows. I’ll maybe look into it later and talk about it on this blog. Maybe it can be an Astrology series or something.
And I love Chinese Astrology! Did you know that that goes deeper then just what sign and element you are too? If you go by the day and time you were born, there is a lot more it could tell about you too.
